Charlotte Mason was an English educator at the turn of the twentieth century. She and her educational philosophy are known for encouraging time outdoors and learning through engaging, narrative books, sometimes deemed, “living books.”

She wrote several influential books, and is known for the following mottos:

  • “Education is an atmosphere, a discipline, a life.”
  • “Education is the science of relations.”
  • “I am, I can, I ought, I will.”

Her approach is child-centered and focuses on the liberal arts.
