Classical Education

Classical education is sometimes summarized as a quest for truth, goodness, and beauty, particularly through the liberal arts. (Liberal because they constituted the education of a free man.)

The liberal arts include grammar, logic, rhetoric (the verbal arts of the trivium), arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy (the mathematical arts of the quadrivium). Classical educators often also incorporate and focus on ancient languages, such as Latin and/or Greek.

The Lutheran Reformers were familiar with this educational tradition and even wrote at length about education with a Christian classical education in mind. Does that mean all Lutherans need to follow a Classical philosophy or approach? No, but it’s quite exciting to those who follow it. 🙂
