Description

Marta Naumann put together a Bookopoly Summer Challenge and offered to share! She created an American History board game based on the classic -opoly game, but instead of real estate you read your way through all sorts of American history topics on an individual board and compare points at the end of summer.

Bookopoly

This resource is a color PDF, but you can print it off in black and white. Each participant gets a board. Each turn the player rolls a dice and lands on a topic of American history. The player chooses, reads, (records information on the back side of the his printed board) and shares a book on the subject, and then takes another turn.

Bookopoly topics include American Explorers, European Explorers, Native people of the Americans, Native Americans West of the Mississippi, Native Americans East of the Mississippi, Science in Early America, Build-up to Revolution, etc. You get the point. This board focuses on American history, with 32 reading squares and occasion squares like “Read a Bible Story or Passage.”

Jail? In jail you get no screens until you finish the next book! Clever! Visiting jail? No screens until you read to someone. I love it!

This will be a fun reading challenge before or after studying American history, and since participants can pick their own books multiple ages and stages can play. Educational fun for the whole family! (A local library may be a big help, especially if it offers a digital lending library.)

Here are the rules:

  1. Roll the dice.
  2. Put a sticker (or other marker) on your board to mark your place.
  3. Read a factual or historical fiction book related to the topic or time period.
  4. Record the title, author, points earned, and date finished on the back of your board.
  5. Tell someone about your book!
  6. Roll again.
