Description

High schoolers have a lot of literature available to them. How can we pick through the wealth to find really great options, both for their academic and pleasure reading? Lutheran high school literature lists!

Let’s offer our students fewer books centered on coming-of-age stories and sexual awakenings, and let’s do that by making use of the wealth of other genres available to us!

These high school literature lists are structured to augment both historical study and free reading. The first list is organized by the date of the setting with secular or standard literature on the left and religious titles on the right. The second list offers titles in a variety of genres to help encourage both reluctant and experienced readers find yet another quality book.

Currently available as a PDF or Word document.

The first list consists of two single-spaced pages. It covers from around 1800 BC with The Epic of Gilgamesh through 1960s with The Outsiders and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

The second list consists of four single-spaced pages. Genres and languages include:

  • Action/Adventure,
  • Allegory,
  • American Literature, American Poets,
  • Asian (Chinese & Japanese),
  • Autobiographies,
  • Biblical Times Historical Fiction,
  • British/English Literature,

  • Spy Novels,
  • War Novels/Military Fiction, and
  • Western.

I won’t lie. American and British sections tend to list authors rather than titles. I thought it would be helpful to see a list of names its generally good to know from the literary world, but I couldn’t find an easy way to pick only a title or two from each.

Generally, the lists of consist of classic works, although some more recent titles, such as The Giver (1993) and All Creatures Great and Small (1972) are included. Some books are listed in both lists and it’s possible a very few are listed in multiple genres.
