I am thrilled to tell you about an LCMS-owned & developed self-defense curriculum that is entirely online: The Great Flip. It is based on Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a grappling sport (much like wrestling).
The Great Flip Curriculum is a non-combative approach to self-defense. The student will not be taught to strike, kick or use aggression or force. Rather, they explore movements in a safe and positive Christian environment for a fun, powerful, and empowering experience.
This program is designed for the whole family with children ages six and older. Her videos stream from Vimeo and last approximately three minutes. (Here is a link to her public vimeo page so you can see some of her freebies.)
Many martial arts are built around Eastern religions. This course, however, draws upon movements and practical strengths specifically for Christians in a way to combat fear and build courage and confidence.
The Great Flip is a monthly or yearly subscription that gives you access to one of three curriculum plans. Curriculum plans include 12 Self-Defense skills & drills, videos, and potentially lesson plans and additional no-contact drills, stretches, etc.
Go here to request a free video and lesson plan, and, when you’re ready, Jody is kindly offering Lutheran families a 10% discount on her faith-filled martial arts with the code LCMS10.
Jody has been on KFUO’s “The Coffee Hour” several times, and you can see those archives here. They address homeschool self-defense as well as combatting bullies and mean behavior, campus safety, and more.
Jody Token also has blog posts, like “Five Surprising Ways to Teach Your Daughter to Take Care of Her Body” and “Create a martial arts experience at home” and a podcast (scroll down to find it).
Thanks, Jody, for all you do!
